Descriptions of Massage Therapy Modalities Offered:

Swedish (Relaxation) Massage

During a Swedish massage, the client will be wearing only a sheet (and blanket/s in winter.) I will use high grade massage oils, and essential oils to massage the superficial layer of muscle. I will use long flowing strokes (gliding), knead the muscles, wring the muscles, and apply cross-fiber friction. I can integrate some stretching (I will ask you if you would like to be stretched), and may integrate deep tissue techniques into tight areas upon the client's request. Swedish Massage is one of the most popular types of massage, it is based on Western concepts of anatomy/physiology as opposed to Eastern style massages which focus on energy healing and balancing the qi.

Therapeutic Massage (Integrated Deep Tissue Techniques):

During this massage the client is also asked to undress while I step out of the room, the client will lay on the massage table under the sheet and blankets provided to draped over the body.  Massage oil is used to lubricate the skin and prevent friction. Techniques used: gliding, kneading, wringing, cross fiber friction, compressions, as well as deeper friction with elbow/forearm/thumbs and trigger point therapy will be applied to work the superficial and deeper muscles of the body. Deep tissue massage is based on Western concepts of anatomy/physiology.

Sports Massage Therapy with optional Cupping ($10 add on).

A much more vigorous massage with integrated stretching designed for athletes, to improve muscle mobility, range of motion in joints, flexibility and release the areas of tension that may have shortened muscles due to repetitive movements from sport. (This is not a relaxing massage.)

If you have a big sporting event coming up, you should get your massage 5-7 days before the event, not the day before otherwise you may still be sore.

Optional: Cold Cupping

I do offer cold cupping (NO glass fire cups, NO blood letting), I have two sets of cups, I have silicone cups OR can use glass cups that come with a pump, I place them on the skin then pump to create a suction in order to loosen muscle tissue, fascia, connective tissue and promote blood flow to an area of tension. There is an additional form to fill out if you want to add cupping to your session. Please be aware there are certain health contraindications for cupping, so some clients may not be able to add this service to their massage treatment

Shiatsu- Eastern Style Massage with integrated Therapeutic Stretching

Shiatsu massage therapy is an Eastern style of massage from Japan which focuses on the meridians in the body. The goal is to balance your qi, the energy flow in your body. This style of massage therapy can be done on the floor, on a futon mat, or on a table. Shiatsu literally means "finger pressure" and the massage is a series of compressions, performed with fingers, palms (hands), elbows, forearms, knees, and feet. Along with compressions, there is more stretching with a shiatsu massage, because the client is not limited by the sheet draping. I usually recommend this type of massage therapy for clients who need to improve mobility/flexibility, those who are interested in the "energy balance" aspect of Eastern massage, or for those who prefer to stay clothed during a massage. If you book a shiatsu massage please wear loose-fitting sweatpants or stretchy yoga pants and a loose-fitting shirt. No shorts, no skirts, no jeans. There is a lot of stretching during shiatsu massages.

Pregnancy (Prenatal) Massage Therapy

A pregnancy massage is basically a Swedish (but can be integrated with some deeper massage work) that has some alterations for pregnant women.

The massage is done with oils on clients who are asked to undress to their comfort level while I step out of the room and are instructed how to drape themselves with sheets and blankets that are provided. An assortment of pillows are provided for the comfort of the client who will be laying in side-lying positions on the table (or possibly face up if that is more comfortable for you.)

If you have any health issues related to your pregnancy please inform me when you call to schedule so that I can assess whether it is safe for you to get a massage.

Policy and procedures

Sonia Alese Massage Therapy - Modesto Massage Therapy

NEW POLICY & Procedures:

My practice follows Practice Guidelines recommended by the Federation of State Massage Therapy Boards (FSMTB), along with infection control recommendations made by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA).

You may see some changes when it is time for your next appointment. I made these changes to help protect my clients and myself. For example:

• I will communicate with you beforehand to obtain updates to your health information and ask you specifically about your potential exposure to COVID-19.

• When you arrive at the office, I’ll ask that you wait in your vehicle and text me that you have arrived, wait for me to respond and tell you it is okay for you to come in.

• I will greet you at the door and use a no touch thermal temperature screening to confirm that you don’t have a fever.

• I’ll ask you if you have developed any symptoms of illness since we spoke on the phone. If you feel ill on the day of your session, there is no penalty for canceling your appointment. Massage is not advised if you have any symptoms of illness.

• Please bring a face mask to use while you are in the building, and during your massage. If you do not have a proper mask (surgical mask or N95, I will provide you with one.)

• I will ask you to sign an informed consent form that states, “I understand that close contact with people increases the risk of infection from COVID-19. By signing this form, I acknowledge that I am aware of the risks involved and give consent to receive massage from this practitioner.”

• There is a hand-hygiene station that I will ask you to use when you enter the office. You will also find hand sanitizer in the reception area and other places in the office for you to use as needed.

I look forward to seeing you again and am happy to answer any questions you may have about the steps I take to keep you, and every client, safe in my practice.

Thank you for being my client. I value your trust and loyalty and look forward to welcoming you back to a safe, therapeutic touch environment.

Forms to Complete:

Health History and Consent forms will need to be filled out at your first appointment, so you may want to be 5-10 minutes early. Please bring I.D. with you. If you are under 18 yrs old, bring your parent or guardian.

There will be paperwork that will inform you of the risk of getting a massage during the COVID-19 outbreak, and you will be informed that if any client or myself contracts it, we are obligated to report this to the health department. This means, I may follow up and call you within 2 weeks of your massage appointment just to make sure that you are feeling well and to be sure you did not forget to inform me if you may have contracted or exposed to someone with COVID-19.

No clients being accompanied by someone:

At this time no one can bring a child, friend, spouse, bf/gf, or partner to their appointment. I am trying to reduce the # of people coming into the office in order to reduce the risk of COVID-19 spread.
