Descriptions of Massage Therapy Modalities Offered:
During a Swedish massage, the client will be wearing only a sheet (and blanket/s in winter.) I will use high grade massage oils, and essential oils to massage the superficial layer of muscle. I will use long flowing strokes (gliding), knead the muscles, wring the muscles, and apply cross-fiber friction. I can integrate some stretching (I will ask you if you would like to be stretched), and may integrate deep tissue techniques into tight areas upon the client's request. Swedish Massage is one of the most popular types of massage, it is based on Western concepts of anatomy/physiology as opposed to Eastern style massages which focus on energy healing and balancing the qi. Swedish massage can aid in a large variety of medical conditions.
During this massage the client is also asked to undress while I step out of the room, the client will lay on the massage table under the sheet and blankets provided to draped over the body. Massage oil is used to lubricate the skin and prevent friction. Techniques used: gliding, kneading, wringing, cross fiber friction, compressions, as well as deeper friction with elbow/forearm/thumbs and trigger point therapy will be applied to work the superficial and deeper muscles of the body. Deep tissue massage is based on Western concepts of anatomy/physiology, it is similar to Swedish massage except that I will also be doing work on muscles much deeper in the body too, whereas Swedish massage only works the superficial layers of muscle. This type of massage can aid a large variety of medical issues.
Sports massage is designed to support fitness, reduce demands of the sport on the body, improve performance & shorten recovery time.
The three main categories include 1. Massage for Events (pre-event, inter-event, post-event) 2. Maintenance Massage 3. Treatment Massage for injury recovery/promote faster healing. Please provide me with more information about your specific sport, your goals/purpose of the massage before you come in. I primarily focus on #2 and #3 : maintenance massage and recovery. Benefits- recover faster from your sport and/or injuries, reduce hypertonic muscle tissue that is slowing you down and reducing your range of motion, improve as an athlete, massage can also reduce stress and help you sleep better which can improve your athletic performance.
A pregnancy massage is basically a Swedish (but can be integrated with some deeper massage work) that has some alterations for pregnant women.
The massage is done with oils on clients who are asked to undress to their comfort level while I step out of the room and are instructed how to drape themselves with sheets and blankets that are provided. An assortment of pillows are provided for the comfort of the client who will be laying in side-lying positions on the table (or will be lying face down on a special massage table pillow made for pregnant women!)
If you have any health issues related to your pregnancy please inform me when you call to schedule so that I can assess whether it is safe for you to get a massage.
Shiatsu massage therapy is an Eastern style of massage from Japan which focuses on the meridians in the body. The goal is to balance your qi, the energy flow in your body. This style of massage therapy can be done on the floor, on a futon mat, or on a table. Shiatsu literally means "finger pressure" and the massage is a series of compressions, performed with fingers, palms (hands), elbows, forearms, knees, and feet. Along with compressions, there is more stretching with a shiatsu massage, because the client is not limited by the sheet draping. I usually recommend this type of massage therapy for clients who need to improve mobility/flexibility, those who are interested in the "energy balance" aspect of Eastern massage, or for those who prefer to stay clothed during a massage. If you book a shiatsu massage please wear loose-fitting sweatpants or stretchy yoga pants and a loose-fitting shirt. No shorts, no skirts, no jeans. There is a lot of stretching during shiatsu massages.
Lymphatic Massage is intended to help those who have issues with fluid build up and/or swelling issues, lymphadema, past cancer where lymph nodes were removed or damaged from chemo, or someone who has had a recent surgery or major injury and continued fluid retention. This type of massage is very light, as I am only working to move the fluid just under the skin using light strokes to "pump" this fluid along in the vessels. I am NOT massaging as deep as the muscle layer is. Some benefits of lymphatic massage include: drain excess fluids, reduce swelling and bloating, improve immune system, improve skin quality, improve digestion, reduced anxiety and stress.
TENS Unit Pen: $5/ Optional Add on treatment:
Temporarily unavailable. A small acupressure tens unit pen device is used by placing the tip onto tense muscle tissue, the device sends a low level electrical impulse which makes muscles contract and "pulse" which stimulates nerve cells which block the transmission of pain signals. The electrical current can also stimulate endorphins (Your body's natural pain killer).
Results may vary person to person.
Gua Sha Scraping is one of the add-ons I offer. It involves using jade, rose quartz or obsidian (volcanic glass) which is cut into thin, smooth pieces of stone and then pressed into the skin, scraping it to create friction. Lighter strokes stimulate the lymphatic system of the body, which controls your immune system. Deeper strokes can work into the muscle tissue (which lies beneath your lymphatic vessels) these strokes promote circulation and help release hypertonic tight muscle tissue thereby allowing for greater mobility and pain-relief. Sometimes gua-sha can leave red or purple blotches on the skin in sensitive individuals. These marks go away on their own over time.
In Chinese medicine gua sha is used to help balance the chi or energy of a person*

I offer cold dry cupping (NO glass fire cups, NO blood letting), I have two sets of cups, I have silicone cups OR can use glass cups that come with a pump, I place them on the skin then pump to create a suction in order to loosen muscle tissue, fascia, connective tissue and promote blood flow to an area of tension. There is an additional form to fill out if you want to add cupping to your session. Please be aware there are certain health contraindications for cupping, so some clients may not be able to add this service to their massage treatment.
